Dr Wise is a registered clinical psychologist and
board-approved supervisor.



Richard is a registered clinical psychologist who provides psychological assessment and intervention for adults and young adults experiencing mental health conditions and general psychological distress. He has worked with clients who have experienced depression, anxiety, stress and burnout, substance use issues, panic, bipolar disorder, psychotic disorders, obsessive compulsive disorder, and personality disorders. He is the Clinical Director of Wise Psychology and the Director of University Counselling Service at University of Nottingham Ningbo China.

Originally from New Zealand, Richard received his professional doctorate in clinical psychology from Monash University in Melbourne, Australia, where his research examined the intersection of acute stress, personality, and decision making in the context of risk. He received his Bachelor of Science with Honours (1st class) in Psychology from Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand, graduating first in his cohort.

As well as private practice, he has consulted in a variety of treatment settings including hospital inpatient, outpatient, and drug addiction treatment facilities in Melbourne, Australia, as well as in university health service settings in China. Richard has worked as both a practitioner and a clinical manager. He is currently based in Melbourne, Australia, but consults with clients locally, nationally, and internationally.

Richard predominantly works from a schema therapy framework, but also draws from cognitive behavioural therapy, mindfulness-based therapies, and psychodynamic psychotherapy. His practice is strongly informed by attachment theory and psychodynamic theoretical frameworks.

He is a member of the Australian Clinical Psychology Association, a Clinical Member of the Shanghai International Mental Health Association, and is registered as a psychologist with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency, with an area of practice endorsement in clinical psychology. He is also a Board-approved supervisor.
